Why Is It So Hard to Treat Ourselves with the Same Care We Give Everyone Else?
Have you ever noticed how quickly we show up for the people we love?
When I’m out showcasing our Untethered gowns, I see a beautiful, completely predictable pattern. A woman will walk up to my table, run her hand over our ultra-soft organic cotton gowns, and her face immediately lights up. Within three seconds, she starts making a mental list.
Not for herself, of course. For everyone else:
"Oh, my mom is starting chemo next month, this would be perfect."
"My sister has a surgery coming up."
"My best friend is about to give birth and needs something cozy for postpartum."
We are total pros at noticing when another woman needs care. We send the meals, we coordinate the care packages, we text to check in after appointments. We never, ever question whether another woman deserves to feel safe, comfortable, and cared for.
But there is one woman who almost never makes the list.
You.
The Culture of "Looking Good" vs. "Feeling Good"
Let’s be honest about the closet situation. Most of us have closets packed with clothes bought for the outside world. We spend money on outfits for weddings, work meetings, vacations, family photos, or date nights. We buy clothes to look polished, professional, or put-together.
And look, there is absolutely nothing wrong with loving fashion!
But we rarely get that same encouragement to invest in clothes meant solely to help our physical bodies feel good when we’re feeling vulnerable. We don’t think about buying a dedicated, thoughtful outfit for an annual physical, a dermatology skin check, a weekly acupuncture session, or a chronic illness flare-up day.
A trendy dress gets you a "Wow, love that outfit!" from a coworker. A super-soft organic cotton recovery gown worn on a quiet, stressful day at home or at a doctor's office goes completely unseen.
But unseen comfort matters just as much.
The "Not Sick Enough" Trap
Why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we minimize our own discomfort?
If your best friend is facing a medical procedure, you’d never dream of telling her to just "tough it out" in a stiff, drafty, scratchy hospital gown. You’d want her to have the softest thing on earth.
Yet, when it’s our turn, we play mind games:
"It’s just a routine doctor's appointment, the paper gown is fine."
"I'm not sick enough to buy nice recovery wear."
We treat physical comfort like a trophy we have to earn by surviving a major crisis, rather than a baseline requirement for taking care of our health.
Comfort Isn't an Indulgence—It's Healthcare
An Untethered gown isn't just for a hospital bed. It’s built for the real, everyday realities of life. Routine medical appointments. Weekly acupuncture. Recovering from a nasty cold.
Put Your Own Name on the List
You don't need a major diagnosis to deserve gentleness. You don't need a surgery on the calendar to buy clothing that makes a vulnerable day feel a little safer.
The next time you see something that could make a hard day softer, notice where your mind goes first. If you immediately think of your mom, your sister, or your friend, take a breath. It is a beautiful thing that you love them so much.
But you are allowed to include yourself in that circle of care.
You are allowed to buy something simply because it feels good, even if no one else is going to see it. You don't have to wait until you are at your absolute worst to start taking care of yourself.
Sometimes, real self-care starts with something incredibly simple: remembering to put your own name at the top of the list.
Take care of you, too.
You don't have to wait for a reason to prioritize your comfort. Explore our collection of Organic Cotton Medical & Recovery Gowns and bring a little more dignity and softness to your wellness routine.
